James Smith – Painter & Sculptor
After a 30-year career as a geologist and geophysicist in the oil industry—including two years in Libya and Italy—James transitioned to art at 60. Before retiring, he spent 17 years leading geological mapping of the North Sea for British Gas.
An avid plein air painter, he has captured landscapes across Namibia, Malawi, France, Italy, Morocco, Nepal, and Greece. Closer to home, he frequently paints in Cornwall, Scotland—his birthplace—and London, where he resides.
James studied life drawing for 15 years at Missenden School of Art under John Meaker and at Amersham College. Initially a watercolorist, he now works exclusively with oils, drawing inspiration from Van Gogh, the Fauves, and the Impressionists.
He is also an accomplished sculptor, having created over 100 works in clay, bronze, and stone.
