SPUTNIK (to travel with)
Open 2nd-25th October
Friday – Sunday 12-4PM
PV: 22nd October 6-9PM
Siobhan Tate will be in residence at BOTH gallery working on Sputnik (to travel with): a durational sculptural performance during which she loads a steel tube structure with raw clay.
As Siobhan orbits this bodily entity, feeding it with material, urgent adjustments needed to rebalance the articulated armature often determine her next move. Over time clay shrinks, putting pressure on the steel joints; before cracking, falling, revealing new planes and calling for readjustment and re-formation using its own recycled material. Seemingly in sympathy with the clay, Siobhan’s own body feels the tear and repair of muscles as it reaches, stretches, presses, pulls, breathes and rests.
Wrestling with structure and gesture, Siobhan finds herself thinking about the conditions through which we move and can be moved.
